i’ve never seen bears in the wild . . .

i grew up in san diego, and my dad took me to the zoo many times. i watched the bus driver throw loaves of bread to yogi and boo-boo as they sat up and waved at the strange beings bussed around while they languished in their canyon home.

there were sun bears and polar bears, too. i felt bad for the polar bears. their fur was greenish. their enclosures were small, and in the nearly 30 years i lived in san diego, it only snowed once.

from there, we moved to escondildo. yeah, the misspelling is on purpose. it was not bad. we rented a condo in a neighborhood of young families. my friend and i had passes for the wild animal park, and we strolled there with the kids on weekdays.

the next move was to carson city, nevada, high desert. four seasons. the winters used to be very long, icy, windy, a lot of snow on the ground. a few floods.

we go to lake tahoe a few times a year, usually in summer. last summer was horrible with so many wildfires. at this time last year, the air quality in carson city was 450 for days on end. a lot of people and animals escaped the flames to move here. there are a lot of deer in the city, mostly downtown (west side). the wild horses have always been here.
